Specifications for biodiesel have been implemented in several countries around the world, most notably in the U.S., through the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), and in Europe through the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). The relevant committees of these groups that oversee fuel specification development, including standards for biodiesel, are comprised of automobile and engine manufacturers, refining companies, biofuels producers, government entities and other fuel users who agree by consensus on specifications to help ensure good quality fuels for safe and satisfactory operation of vehicles and engines.
In the United States, the ASTM specification for biodiesel is D 6751; for the EU, EN 14214. The ASTM specification defines biodiesel as a fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long-chain fatty acids derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. Raw vegetable oils and animal fats that have not been processed do not meet biodiesel specifications. Moreover, the current ASTM specification is for biodiesel as a stock for blending into petrodiesel and is not meant to be a specification for B100 as a stand-alone fuel.
Amereco’s biodiesel product meets or exceeds the ASTM D 6751 standard. In fact, the Company may produce a premium BDO product for which it may charge a higher price. The Company expects that the market will demand a BDO product that meets or exceeds the ASTM 6751 standard and that is consistent in its quality. To this end, the Company has a rigorous third party testing and certification program for each batch of BDO that it produces.
ASTM standards are not laws, but many states adopt ASTM standards and transpose them into law.
